Vocational Rehabilitation Mission Statement

The overall mission of the Sacramento State Vocational Rehabilitation Counseling Program is to produce qualified rehabilitation counselors who possess the skills and dedication to assist individuals with disabilities in achieving self-determination, independence, meaningful employment, and full community integration. The program mission addresses the critical shortage of qualified rehabilitation counselors in the state of California and the nation and seeks to increase the number of counselors available to meet an ever-growing need.

Diversity

The program welcomes applications from individuals with disabilities and from diverse cultural and ethnic backgrounds. We are proud that the approximately 40% of our graduates are persons with disabilities and 35% are from ethnic minority groups.

Vocational Rehabilitation Program

A core of required graduate courses -- including psychological and medical aspects of disabilities, work evaluation, case practices, job placement, counseling theory and practice, appraisal, multicultural counseling, and research methods -- provides the basic knowledge and skills to function in the rehabilitation field. Individual practicum is completed on campus and an internship is performed at a rehabilitation agency that serves consumers with disabilities.

The program has been in existence since 1968.   Over 400 graduates have received their Master’s degree in Vocational Rehabilitation Counseling since the program began.  The Program is fully accredited by the Council on Rehabilitation Education (CORE) and is accredited by CORE through 2012.    Student enrollment is about 40 students per year.

Graduates of the program work in a variety of vocational rehabilitation settings.  These include the California Department of Rehabilitation, community colleges Disabled Students Program and Services offices, the Department of Veterans Affairs Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment and private non-profit agencies such as PRIDE.  Graduates of the program usually start as counselors in the filed and after some years of experience, move up to become program specialists and administrators.   We have had a number of students go on to doctoral programs.
