Welcome to the Special Education Credential and Graduate Degree Programs Site

We are pleased that you have chosen to view the many special education programs available at Sac State University. Do feel free to contact the EDS office or a faculty member in your area of interest for any assistance or clarifications you may have regarding our programs.

As you view the fully-accredited credential program options available to you, please be aware that:

  • The California Commission on Teacher Credentials (CCTC) has recognized our Special Education programs with an award of excellence.

  • Virtually all of our candidates obtain special education positions upon (or prior to) graduation. Our pre-K to 12 partners recognize the quality of instruction received by our Sac State graduates. Because of this, our graduates are the first choice for employment by many school districts and county offices.

  • Our programs are designed with working professionals in mind. The coursework, which is a combination of the practical as well as the theoretical, generally begins at 4:00 or 7:00 p.m., one day a week for each class.

  • Internships are available. Approximately 70% of our current teacher candidates are enrolled in such programs and are teaching (and paid by their employer) while enrolled in courses.

  • Candidates in our programs may attend full-time or part-time. It is up to the teacher candidate, in deliberations with their assigned full-time faculty member, to develop the program of study most appropriate to their needs.

  • The length of time needed to complete one of our special education credentialing programs is comparable to other teacher training institutions.

  • Sac State is still the least expensive teacher-training program available in the area. It is highly cost-effective!
