School Specialization Field Study

Students are required to complete the first 50% of their field study hours at a Designated CSUS Site. Additionally, students must complete at least 50% of their total Field Study units in schools/agencies that meet the requirements of a multicultural setting (a minimum of 46% minorities served) and their experiences must include working in at least two different grade levels (i.e. elementary/junior high, elementary/high school, high school/elementary, high school/junior high).

Designated School Sites

1. Alliance For Excellence

Schools within the Alliance designated for field study placement include: Edison Elementary School, Greer Elementary School, Howe Elementary School, Jonas Salk Middle School and El Camino High School. The Alliance for Excellence Counseling Project is a partnership between the San Juan Unified School District (SJUSD) and CSUS. It provides counseling services to selected schools on the west end of SJUSD. The Alliance schools have a shared vision of educational excellence with the primary goal of providing powerful learning opportunities for ALL preschool through adult learners in the in the five school attendance areas.

Guidelines: Students will provide individual and group counseling to students at the school under supervision of the school counselor at the respective school.

Positions Available: Dependent upon individual school site needs.

Application Procedure: Students requests will be considered, however, placements will be determined by a joint meeting between CSUS Advisors and Alliance for Excellence Counselors. Students will be invited to an interview with the assigned school site counselor.

2. Elk Grove Project (Elk Grove Unified School District)

The Elk Grove Project includes multiple school sites at all grade levels: elementary, middle and high school. The school sites are located within diverse communities and needs (i.e. ethnicity, socio-economic status) and provide CSUS with rich cross-cultural experiences.

Guidelines: Students will provide individual and group counseling to students at the school under supervision of the school counselor at the respective school.

Positions Available: Dependent upon individual school site needs.

Application Procedure: Student requests will be considered, however, placements will be determined by a joint meeting between CSUS Advisors and the District Designee. Students are required to complete a placement form in order to participate in the Elk Grove Project. NOTE: Placement form will be e-mailed to interested students and returned (via email) to the District Designee. Students will then be invited to an interview with the assigned school site counselor.

3. Sacramento City Unified School District (SCUSD)

SCUSD includes Healthy Start Services at three designated school sites: Bret Harte Elementary School, McClatchy High School and Rosemont High School. The sites are located within diverse communities and needs (i.e. ethnicity, socio-economic status) and provide CSUS students with rich cross-cultural experiences.

Positions Available: Approximately 4 positions available per semester at each site.

Application Procedure: Student requests will be considered, however, placements will be determined by a joint meeting between CSUS Advisors and SCUSD. Follow up interviews will be requested by the site supervisor.

4. Davis Joint Unified School District

DJUSD is located in the town of Davis, a primarily middle to upper-middle income community. The district offers a variety of special programs and services, including school improvement; assistance to limited speakers of English; resource specialists in reading; drug, alcohol and tobacco prevention education; secondary counseling; extended library hours for secondary schools and a school-to-career program. The district also provides a special education program, Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) Program and summer school programs for grades K–12. Two school sites are available: Davis Senior High School with an emphasis on academic excellence and college preparation; Emerson Junior High School, a 7th through 9th grade campus, one of three junior high schools in Davis and holds approximately 975 students.

Positions Available: Both sites require a full year commitment.

5. Migrant Education Advisory Program (MEAP)

MEAP is a California State University pilot project that provides academic advisement and support services to middle and high school migrant students in order to help them to experience educational success and ensure that they graduate from high school. Applicants are to be able to communicate fluently in English, as well as in Spanish, and possess knowledge of the migrant lifestyle.

6. Omni Youth Programs

Omni Youth Programs is a non-profit agency whose mission is to provide free drug and gang prevention counseling and education to high risk youth and their families. Counselors, interns and volunteers work with 800 youth and 300 adults annually. Programs include Peers Against Substance Abuse – drug and gang prevention for 9-12 year olds, Strengthening Families – evening program for high risk middle school youth and their families, LifeSkills – after school middle school program for homeless teens, and Omni Youth Connection – counseling with youth and their families.

Positions Available: 4 School Specialization Students for daytime programs & 2 students for day/evening hours

Applicant Procedure: Student requests will be considered, however, placements will be determined by a joint meeting between CSUS Advisors and Omni Agency Representative. Follow up interviews will be requested by the site supervisor.

7. Options for Youth

Options for Youth is a WASC Accredited Charter School that provides flexible programs for students so that they may complete their high school diploma, G.E.D. or re-entry at grade level in a comprehensive or alternate school. Independent study students complete assignments at home but are also required to meet with a credentialed teacher at least twice weekly for one-on-one instruction, testing, guidance counseling and access to state-of-the-art technology.

Positions Available: 2 students for day/evening hours

Applicant Procedure: Student requests will be considered, however, placements will be determined by a joint meeting between CSUS Advisors and Options for Youth Representative. Follow up interviews will be requested by the site supervisor.

 

Specialization Sites

1. MAAP

The mission of MAAP is to improve the general health and welfare of the Latino population and residents of California through the provision of social services aimed at alleviation the effects of substance abuse, lack of health services and other needs that impact the Latino community. Multiple programs serve elementary through adult age clients.

Applicant Procedure: Student requests will be considered, however, placements will be determined by a joint meeting between CSUS Advisors and MAAP Representative. Follow up interviews will be requested by the site supervisor.

2. Success Academy

Community Day School that serves K–8 students population within the Sacramento City Unified School District. Diverse student population with teacher to student ratio of 1 to 18. Opportunity to develop individual counseling skills.

3. Folsom Middle School

The campus holds approximately 1100 students evenly split between 6th and 8th grade. This relatively new school maintains updated technology and a host of services including counselors, tutorials and other student directed programs. There are lots of opportunities for one-on-one and group counseling.

4. Sacramento City Unified School District

Healthy Start Services at five specialized elementary school sites are available in South Sacramento. Diverse communities and needs are served.

5. La Familia Counseling Center, Inc.

La Familia Counseling Center has been providing muti-cultural/multi-level counseling, outreach and support services to low income, at-risk youth and families for the past 28 years. La Familia has a history of successfully operating programs and has been widely recognized locally, statewide and nationally. Services include counseling, outreach and support services to at-risk youth and their families, early prevention for pregnant women or families with newborns, gang violence suppression, homeless teen project, neighborhood alcohol prevention project.

Positions Available: Dependent on agency needs and requires Spanish speaking bilingual students.

6. People Reaching Out

People Reaching Out works with youth, families and communities in making positive choices to avoid substance abuse and violence. The program services Woodland Schools.

Applicant Procedure: Recommended students will meet with the executive director to review the semester, determine whether we want to continue our partnership as a "Designated Site"
