Child Development Major A
Child Development Major A is an academic degree which incorporates general education requirements along with courses in the Child Development Major. This major is appropriate for students pursuing a variety of careers and is flexible to allow students to design their programs as closely alligned with personal objectives as possible. The Child Development Program offers a core set of courses on children’s growth and development, across contexts and developmental phases. Within the major, students work with a faculty advisor to select courses from a list of elective courses to best fit their personal and career interests. Other careers, such as child life specialist, research or investigative agencies, mentoring opportunities, administrative or directorship roles and graduate or post-graduate school are also open to students. Students may also apply for a Child Development Permit through the California Teacher Credentialing Commission.
While the primary goal of the program is to ensure mastery of academic content, the Child Development major also requires the development of written communication skills and includes expectations that students will:
- Master written proficiency on observations, essay exams, topical term papers and reflective thought papers.
- Attend to the quality of the written components of assignments as well as to the content component of assignments.
- Present logical arguments derived from a clearly stated thesis where the arguments should be based on thoughtful examination of concepts and research with accurate reference to sources.
- Complete written assignments according to the format and content specified by instructors' instructions and the American Psychological Association (APA) Style Manual.
