Single Subject Credential Information

Teach for Equity and Social Justice BMED Single Subject Credential Program

  • Do you want to be a middle or high school teacher for social justice? 
  • Do you have an interest in working with language minority secondary students?
  • Do you have an interest in working in culturally and ethnically diverse schools and communities?

If so, consider applying to the nationally recognized teacher preparation program in BMED.

Goals as a Single Subject Program in Multicultural Education    

  • In-depth preparation to work with English Learners (EL) through coursework on EL methods and strategies as well as infusion of EL content in all program courses.
  • Preparing future teachers as advocates and change agents for social justice and equity in public education.
  • Exploring the issues of prejudice towards people of different races; socioeconomic classes, language and language varieties, abilities and disabilities and sexual orientation.

Program Description

  • Two semester secondary teacher preparation program.
  • Student teaching in local middle and high schools serving low-income and language minority students.
  • Only center with the Bilingual authorization (BCLAD in Spanish, Hmong and Chinese)
  • Afternoon and evening courses
  • Small cohorts allow for individualized mentoring and close working relationships with faculty.
  • Closely integrated coursework and field experiences.
  • Financial assistance available.

(6) Six units of approved Ethnic Studies coursework or equivalents focused on target population.

Other BCLAD Emphasis Requirements:

  • For Spanish and Hmong - Passage of language of emphasis examination AND ethno-history examination administered by BMED
  • For Cantonese, Mandarin, Khmer, Korean and Filipino - Passage of the CTC BCLAD Examination Test 5 (Culture of Emphasis) AND Passage of the CTC BCLAD Examination Test 6 (Language of Emphasis), or other CTC approved assessment. Documentation of 60 hours of approved work in the target language community
